Hertfordshire Big Band Benefit Concert

The acclaimed Hertfordshire Big Band came to Empuriabrava on the evening of June 1st to give an outdoor concert in support of the BBA. What a good night it proved to be.

About 450 came to sit in the square, enjoy a drink and listen to the band, whose repertoire included many jazz classics and as you would expect, some good 1940’s swing.

During the break in the band’s sets a charity auction was held with the proceeds going to the BBA. The auctioneer was Erik Rosman, and our thanks go to him for giving his time to do this. The auction items included deals in restaurants in the area, spa treatments, boat trips, entry to local attractions, Spanish lessons, lunch with the British Consul-General, Lloyd Millen, and many others, too numerous to mention. Local businesses and individuals were very generous and we cannot thank them enough for their support. The local bars in the square were also very supportive.

At the end of the evening the BBA had raised €445 from the collection and €528.50 from the auction a grand total of €973.50, which all must agree is a good sum. None of this would have been possible without a great deal of work by the small working group, so special thanks to them for all their work before and on the night.

Quiz night in support of the British Benevolent Association

Come and enjoy a fun evening with a general knowledge quiz and a raffle, all profits in aid of the British Benevolent Association for Girona Province (BBA).

For those who have yet to hear of the BBA, it is an organisation run purely by and with volunteers that comes to the assistance of British and Commonwealth Citizens living or staying in Girona province when they need help (Website :  http://bba-girona.org/  ). This can take the form of accompanying someone to a hospital appointment, visiting prisoners in Figueras prison, helping an elderly person with their shopping or just signposting people to other organisations when appropriate.

Offering this type of service requires funding, even though all committee members and volunteers willingly give their time free of charge.

The Quiz Night will take place on FRIDAY 28 APRIL, starting at 7pm with the quiz beginning at 7.30.  There will be a participation fee of €4 of which €2 will to support the BBA.

The Venue for the evening will be the Clubhouse at Can Carbonell** – a private club between Llagostera and Vidreres with a bar serving a good range of drinks and tapas. (** see below for directions).

John Sturgeon will be the quiz master for the evening – those in l’Escala will know him well.  Teams will consist of four – think of a fun name and register early as there will be a maximum of 10 teams (so a good chance to win!).

To reserve a table for your team – or if you do not have a team register anyway and we will make up teams of four – please send an e-mail to Anne Collier on:

Come and exercise your grey cells – and help a good cause at the same time.
